Birdshot was formed in the summer of 2007 because a group of disc golf buddies wanted to fill a void. Nobody was running disc golf events in the Houston area anymore. Saturday only, local PDGA sanctioned tournaments was the model of success at the time. Originally started in the earlier part of the 2000 decade by Chris Himing and the Texas 10 Tour, the model was emulated by locals John Edwards and Scott Rowzanoski of Team Disaster with their Gulf Coast Series followed by Rick "Danger" Bannister with his Fly-N-High series. But by 2007, none of the former were running events. Chris had to return to his native Australia when his Visa ran out and as for the others, trying to run a disc golf business based on periodic events and selling disc golf products out of your car or garage was not sustainable. The Saturday series had gone away and local players had to travel to other areas of Texas to play sanctioned tournaments. The core group that decided to form Birdshot wanted to revive the sanctioned area tournament series and since they would be local events, it was decided to call it The Greater Houston Championship Series.
